AI visibility for home services

When someone asks ChatGPT for a roofer in your town, are you named?

Homeowners now ask AI who to call. DidItIndex asks ChatGPT and Claude the same question your customers ask, shows you which companies they recommend, and tells you in plain English what to fix so yours is one of them.

Customers ask AI before they call

A homeowner with a leaking roof or a dead AC unit wants a name fast. More of them now type the question into ChatGPT instead of scrolling a search page. The answer names a handful of companies with a reason for each, and most people call one of those.

52%

of U.S. consumers used an AI tool to find a local business in the last 30 days, up from 9% a year earlier.

81%

of consumers check an AI recommendation before acting on it, often by reading reviews.

1.2%

of multi-location brand locations studied were recommended by ChatGPT, compared with 35.9% showing in Google's local 3-pack.

What we found when we asked

On October 30, 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Claude, both with live web search, for “AC repair in Katy TX” and “roof repair company in Katy TX”. A few things stood out:

They named about six companies

Each answer listed five or six contractors with one reason each. Only a few companies were named by both assistants.

Most sources were not the contractors

ChatGPT leaned on directory sites, Angi, a Reddit thread, a utility company contractor list and other companies' pages. Claude used more contractors' own pages, plus Yelp, Angi and HomeAdvisor.

City pages got cited

Two of the pages Claude quoted were roofers' own pages written for Katy specifically, not their homepages.

Plain facts got repeated

The reasons given were facts printed on websites and listings: warranties, 24/7 emergency service, license and insurance, years in business, review ratings.

Answers change from day to day, so this is one snapshot, not a ranking. Read the full test.

What the scan checks

Every scan runs the full 50-point audit. These are the parts that matter most for a contractor.

Do ChatGPT and Claude name you?

We ask both, with live web search, the question your customer would ask, such as “roof repair in Katy”, and show every company and site they cite.

Can AI read your site at all?

Some hosting setups and security plugins block AI crawlers without anyone noticing. If they cannot get in, nothing else matters.

One page per service and city

A single “Services” page with eight bullet points answers no one's question. We check for pages AI can quote.

Does your site say what you are?

Structured data tells machines your business type, service area, phone and hours. Many contractor sites have none.

Built for the trades

The scan works on any business website. It is most useful where customers compare a few companies before they call.

How it works

Enter your website and what customers search for

For example “AC repair in Katy TX”. Add your service pages too, up to 25 pages per scan.

See who AI recommends, and why

Your report shows whether ChatGPT and Claude named you, who they named instead, and a short plain-English list of what to fix first.

Fix, re-scan, and compare against a competitor

Re-scan after changes, or run a side-by-side comparison with a company AI did recommend to see exactly where they are ahead.

Track it every week

Prompt Tracking asks ChatGPT and Claude “who should I call” questions for your city every week or month, and emails you when you start or stop being named. 1 credit per question per run.

One credit per page, no subscription, and credits never expire. See credit packs.

Questions from contractors

Do people really ask ChatGPT for a contractor?

More every month. In a 2026 survey of over 1,000 U.S. consumers by SOCi, 52% said they had used an AI tool to find a local business in the last 30 days, up from 9% the year before. The AI answer usually names a handful of companies, so being one of them matters.

I already rank on Google Maps. Is that not enough?

It helps, but it is not the same thing. When we asked ChatGPT and Claude for AC repair and roof repair in Katy, Texas, they pulled from Yelp, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Reddit, a utility company contractor list, roundup articles and contractors' own pages. A business can rank on the map and still be missing from that answer.

What does the scan check on a contractor website?

Whether AI crawlers can reach your pages, whether your site tells machines what you do and where, whether each service has its own page, whether your pages state the facts AI repeats (license, insurance, warranty, emergency hours, years in business), and what ChatGPT and Claude say when asked for your service in your area.

I am not technical. Will I understand the report?

Yes. Every report starts with a short plain-English summary of what to fix first, and every failed check comes with a specific fix you can do yourself or hand to whoever manages your website.

How much does it cost?

You get 5 free scans when you sign up, no card required. After that you buy credits, one credit per page scanned, with no subscription and no expiry.
