How to Check If ChatGPT Knows Your Website Exists

July 7, 2026  ·  By Cartez Augustus  ·  5 min read

Why this question matters

When someone asks ChatGPT to recommend a service, explain a topic, or compare options, the model draws on what it knows and what it can look up. If your website is not part of either, you do not exist in that conversation. No ranking, no snippet, no second chance. The customer hears about your competitor instead.

The good news is that checking your status takes minutes, not weeks. Here are five tests, from quickest to most thorough.

Test 1: Ask about your domain directly

Open ChatGPT and ask a simple question:

What is [yourdomain.com]? What does this website do?

Three outcomes are possible. The model describes your site accurately, which means you are in its knowledge. The model describes it wrong, which means it has stale or thin information about you. Or the model says it is not familiar with the site, which means you are effectively invisible in its training data.

An inaccurate description is worth taking seriously. If the AI thinks you sell something you stopped selling in 2023, that is what it tells the people who ask.

Test 2: Ask the question your customers ask

Do not ask about your brand. Ask about your category:

What are the best [your service] providers for [your customer type]?

This is the test that reflects real buyer behavior, because your future customers do not know your name yet. Note which companies get mentioned. Those are the sites winning AI visibility in your space right now, and their content is worth studying.

Test 3: Check with browsing turned on

ChatGPT with web access behaves differently than the base model. Ask the same category question with browsing enabled and watch which sources it pulls. If you appear in live-search answers but not in base-model answers, your recent content is findable but your domain has not built lasting authority yet. If you appear in neither, you likely have technical problems blocking discovery.

Test 4: Verify AI crawlers can reach you

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser and look for lines mentioning GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, or ClaudeBot. A disallow rule aimed at these crawlers, or a blanket disallow for all user agents, means you are actively telling AI systems to stay out. Many sites block AI crawlers without knowing it because of a copied robots.txt template or an overzealous security plugin.

Test 5: Repeat the tests over time

One test is a snapshot. AI answers shift as models retrain, as live search indexes update, and as your competitors publish. The site ChatGPT recommends this month may not be the one it recommends next month. Checking once and assuming the answer holds is how sites quietly lose visibility without anyone noticing.

The limits of manual testing

Manual spot checks are free and worth doing, but they have real gaps. You only see one phrasing of one question in one model. You have no record of what the answer was last month, so you cannot tell whether you are trending up or down. And none of it tells you why you are missing, which is the part you can actually fix.

DidItIndex automates the whole exercise. A scan queries AI systems about your domain, records how they describe you, checks whether they recommend you for your topic, and pairs that with 46 technical checks covering the crawler access, schema, and content signals that determine citability. Instead of guessing why ChatGPT ignores you, you get the specific failing checks and how to fix each one.

Run the five manual tests today. If the answers are not what you hoped, a scan will show you exactly where the problem lives.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if ChatGPT knows my website?

Ask ChatGPT directly what your domain is and what it does. If the model describes your site accurately it is in its knowledge. If it says it is not familiar with the site, you are effectively invisible in its training data.

Why does ChatGPT describe my website incorrectly?

Inaccurate descriptions usually mean the model has stale or thin information about your domain. This matters because that inaccurate description is what the model tells anyone who asks about you.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from finding my site?

Yes. If your robots.txt disallows GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, or all user agents, you are telling the OpenAI crawlers not to access your content. Many sites block AI crawlers accidentally through a copied template or a security plugin.

How often should I re-test?

AI answers shift as models retrain and as live search indexes update. A single test is a snapshot, not a status. Re-testing on a schedule is the only way to know whether you are trending up or down.
