What Is AI Prompt Tracking? A Plain-English Guide for Small Businesses
For twenty years, businesses tracked where they ranked on Google for a list of keywords. AI assistants do not have ranks in the same way. They write an answer, and you are either in it or you are not.
Prompt tracking is the AI version of rank tracking. You pick the questions your customers ask, an AI visibility tool asks ChatGPT, Claude or other assistants those questions on a schedule, and records whether your business is named, where it appears in the list, and who is named instead. Over time you see a trend instead of a guess.
Why one check is not enough
AI answers change. Ask the same question twice and you can get two different lists. In our Katy tests, ChatGPT and Claude also disagreed with each other most of the time: 41 businesses named across four questions, only 6 named by both.
So a single check, good or bad, could be noise. Asking the same questions every week or every month and watching the pattern is the only honest way to know whether you are gaining or losing ground.
What a good prompt tracker records
- Named or not. Did the answer mention your business, under any of the names you go by?
- Position. If the answer is a list, were you first or fifth?
- Who was named instead. Over several runs this becomes share of voice: which competitors AI recommends most often for your questions.
- The sources. Which websites the assistant read to build its answer. The ones you are missing from are your to-do list (sometimes called a citation gap).
- The searches it ran. Assistants type their own web searches before answering. Seeing those words tells you how AI looks for businesses like yours.
- Location. A question asked from Katy and the same question asked from Dallas can get different answers. Local businesses should track from their own area.
How to choose your prompts
Write questions the way a customer would type them, not the way a marketer would. Include the service and the place. Mix urgent questions with research questions. For a plumbing company, a good starting set might be:
- emergency plumber in Katy TX
- who should I call for a water heater replacement in Katy
- best plumber near Cinco Ranch
- how much does slab leak repair cost in Katy
Leave your business name out. You want to know if AI names you when nobody asked about you. Four to ten questions is plenty for one business. More than that and you spend money tracking questions nobody really asks.
How often to track
Weekly is the sweet spot for most businesses. It is frequent enough to catch a drop within days and slow enough that each change means something. Monthly works for businesses that just want a regular check-in. Daily tracking mostly records the normal day-to-day wobble of AI answers, and it costs more without telling you much more. (Our guide to how often to check AI visibility goes deeper on cadence.)
What to do with the results
Prompt tracking tells you what AI says. To learn why, look at the businesses it names and the sources it reads, then compare against your own site. Common fixes are clearer service and town pages, plain-sentence facts like hours and warranties, complete directory listings and schema markup. Our AI visibility playbook covers them in order.
Then keep tracking. When a fix works, you will see it as a gained mention in the following runs. When something slips, you hear about it early.
Prompt tracking on DidItIndex
We built prompt tracking to be simple and cheap enough for a single local business:
- Up to 10 questions per business, asked to both ChatGPT and Claude with live web search
- Weekly or monthly, your choice
- Optional city and state, so answers come back as if asked from your area
- Other names you go by count as you
- Who AI recommends most, where to get listed, and the searches each AI ran
- An email only when AI starts or stops naming you, plus one short monthly summary
- 1 credit per question per run, no subscription. Questions neither AI answers are refunded
Four questions tracked weekly uses about 17 credits a month. Not sure which questions to track? Try one first with the free AI check, then create a free account and turn it into a weekly tracker in one click.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI prompt tracking?
Prompt tracking asks AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude the questions your customers ask, on a schedule, and records whether your business is named, its position, who is named instead and which sources were used.
How is prompt tracking different from rank tracking?
Rank tracking records your position in search results for keywords. Prompt tracking records whether an AI answer mentions you at all, and where, for questions written the way customers ask them.
How many prompts should a small business track?
Four to ten questions is plenty for one business. Write them like a customer would, with the service and the place, and leave your business name out.
How often should I track AI prompts?
Weekly suits most businesses. It catches drops within days without recording the normal daily wobble of AI answers. Monthly works for a regular check-in.
